The Airmen’s drive for repromotion took a massive hit on Sunday as they fall to Div2 top dogs Ceres at the Nomads pitch. Ian Araneta started the scoring in the first half with a poke in off a rebound from a Ryan Lirio kick that Ceres netminder Louie Casas smothered.
Ceres pulled one back before halftime with a looper over a misplaced Ken Dolloso. Shortly after the second half began Ceres made it 2-1 off a header.
PAF then dominated the rest of the game but couldn’t find an equalizer. Butoy Braga hit the post with a fierce shot from the flank, Bulldog Albor had an outside-of-the-boot shot just go a few feet over the bar, and Ian fluffed a header and had a free kick go just high.
Promising play from PAF but they are now three points behind third place Laos and five short of second-place Jeepney. Air Force probably need to sweep against Navy, Union, Jeepney, Laos, Agila, Dolphins, Nomads and MAJ and need the beep-beep gang and Laos to stumble. Only two teams make the top flight.
Good to see PAF playing Ceres tough again. They drew with the Bacolod side 1-1 in the first round.
Jason Sabio didn’t play but he was there in the game and hopes to impress Azkals coach Thomas Dooley and earn selection to the Challenge Cup squad.
