I hope you’re all enjoying the World Cup. Football is such a wonderful thing isn’t it?
Let’s try to spread the joy of the game to those in the cradle of football in the Philippines.
Barotac Nuevo was THE football town of the Philippines once. So many national team players came through the small municipality an hour outside of Iloilo city.
Every day dozens of little kids play on the plaza field outside the San Antonio de Padua church.
The enthusiasm and promise is there, but there needs to be more competitions and development.
Last year Ian Bayona Araneta, 9-time international goal scorer for the Azkals and proud Barotacnon, held a Pahampang sa Kabataan tournament in Barotac. It attracted a lot of teams in many age groups, and they played even through heavy rain.
Ian would love to make this happen again this year later this month, but he needs sponsors. He needs football lovers with big hearts who can help out. I’ve already helped raise some money with a Football-oke gig a while back but we still need to raise a few tens of thousands of pesos. Ian does not charge an entry fee for teams in his tournaments.
If you are interested in giving a donation or being a sponsor, please message Ian at his Facebook page. Any amount would be most welcome.
Thanks for reading. Please spread the word! Mabuhay ang football sa Pilipinas!
