Before I start talking about the Energizer Night Race 2014, a story.
In 1965 a young and ambitious engineer started working for a company called Union Carbide. They made chemicals, but also Eveready batteries.
The engineer ended up helping build and run the company’s plants in Cebu and in Mandaluyong. In 1978 he was sent to Hong Kong to work for Union Carbide there. Stints in Indonesia and Singapore as managing director soon followed. In 1988 he was called home to be the president of the company that would be Energizer Philippines. He called time on his career in 2000 at the age of 65 after three and a half decades of loyal service. For a few years after, he stayed on as a consultant.
The engineer’s name is Antonio Maria Jose Guerrero, my father. He is the reason why I grew up abroad. And the company he gave the best years of his life to, Energizer, pretty much sent me to school and fed me.
When I get a text to cover their event’s press con, I cannot say no.
The Energizer Night Race will take place on September 6, 2014 in Filinvest Alabang. There are three categories: 3k, 5k, and 10k. The price of admission is P600 for the 3k, P700 for the 5k, and P800 for those going for the quarter marathon.
You get a free Energizer LED headlight worth P499 in the pre-race goodie bag, so it’s a great deal.
Energizer has done these night races over thirty times in twenty countries. The races raise funds for http://www.onemillionlights.org, an NGO that distributes safe, solar-rechargeable lighting for impoverished communities all over the world. Another beneficiary is the Kapuso Foundation of GMA. It was reported in Friday’s press con that over a thousand rechargeable lights have been distributed in the Philippines alone. A video shown in the Energizer office revealed that the previous races had resulted in 23 million hours of light for poor communities all over the world. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.
Footage of the previous races show the runners like fireflies, their headlights hopping up and down as they run in the darkness. Check out this video.
This is the sixth Energizer Night Race and it should be a good one. Registration starts August 2 and runs until August 31. You can sign up at Runnr stores in BGC and Alabang Town Center and in Brooks SM North EDSA Annex. Another option is to visit http://www.facebook.com/EnergizerPH or go to http://www.energizerbatteries.com.
I’m a bona fide Energizer baby, and I’m proud that this company my family has been associated with is doing so much good.
