Arnel Bautista of Barobo, Surigao del Sur, has won the King of Sports 10 Ball Cup after beating Boots Augusto in the final on Saturday night via an 11-6 score in the King of Sports Resto Bar in Quezon City.
The veteran shooter topped a field of 42 shooters to win the US $5,000 top prize. Augusto consoles himself with US$2,000.
Bautista saw Augusto seize a 3-2 lead early off a sensational jump shot on the four ball. But in rack nine Bautista surged ahead 5-4 via a rare three-consecutive fouls rack win after Augusto broke the cue ball off the table.
Augusto leveled in rack ten but Bautista won the next five. Rack fourteen was a shocker, with Bautista missing a three ball, only for Augusto, from Mactan, Cebu, to graze the six enroute to trying to pot the three in the next rack. Bautista accepted the gift and ran out for 9-5. In the next rack he reached the hill, and two racks later he was the champ.
Bautista had earlier defeated Resty Labastida in the semis while Augusto eliminated Bacolodnon Johann Chua, who had a fine tournament, knocking out Ramil Gallego and Jeff De Luna in previous rounds.
Germany’s Ralf Souquet and American Rodney Morris participated in the event but Morris was the only foreigner who made the last 16, where he lost to John Rebong. Dennis Orcollo exited in the round of 16 via an 9-8 loss to Labastida.
The tournament was staged pool patrons Perry and Verna Mariano of Bugsy Promotions. Star Billiards of Sebastian Chua hosted the preliminary rounds.
The competition comes just before the Pacman 10 Ball tournament in General Santos City that starts on September 1.
