San Beda wins Ang Liga title as Arellano walks out.

San Beda Ang Liga champs in just 31 minutes!

San Beda Ang Liga champs in just 31 minutes!

San Beda has won the 2014 Ang Liga preseason collegiate football league championship but in far from ideal circumstances in the title match against the Arellano Chiefs.

On Saturday in their home field the Red  Lions took the lead in the second minute with a header by Fil-Brit striker Connor Tacagni off a delivery by Jerome Marzan.

Or so they tell me. I came late, at around the 15th minute.

In the 31st minute Bedan Miguel Caindec converted off a breakaway to make it 2-0.

Arellano head coach Ravelo Saluria had seen enough, and instructed his team to take leave of the pitch. They never returned, and referee Aldous Mirafuentes II awarded the match, and the championship, to San Beda.

I slogged through traffic from Makati to Mendiola, just to watch about fifteen fucking minutes of football. Ganda.

A livid Saluria claimed there was an obvious offside on the play that was not called. He also said that the non-call was a bit of a straw that broke the camel’s back. He requested a neutral venue for the game and didn’t get one. Match commissioner Ariel Serrantes said that none was available.

Saluria’s rant about the home pitch is just plain weird. There were only a handful of fans from Beda watching the game, and there seemed to be just as many Arellano supporters.

Oh, and Arellano is walking distance from San Beda.

Saluria is an old hand in Pinoy football. The Barotacnon, who is a former referee, has done his bit to help the sport by developing lots of young kids and bringing them to Manila to develop their skills and their careers. But he has done harm by conceding this game.

He deprived 22 players a  priceless  hour of championship match experience. Plus, he has a very decent side in AU. Cristituto Pino is a known goalscorer, and midfielder Raymart De Los Santos was impressive in the short time I saw him. The Chiefs very easily could have turned the game around with just under an hour to go.

Walkouts also cheapen the game and competitions. They make Philippine football look unprofessional and disorganized. And to do it in a championship match is doubly poor.

If he had a problem with the officiating, he should have played the game out, then protested after.

I wonder what Cherifer, the AU football team’s sponsor, thinks of this. I’m hoping the Chiefs are not allowed to play in the next Ang Liga.

At any rate, congratulations to Beda. They now have won the double of the NCAA title and now this.  Are they playing in the Unigames, with a treble in sight?

Kudos for Topcomms for supporting this tournament with their Star FIFA “A” Balls.

  1. Ndi na bago ung mga bagay na ganyan sa coach ng arellano, try to ask atty.tualy of ncrfa about sa deal nila about sa players transfer during UFL Cup 2012/2013. kawawa mga players, they cant decide para sa sarili nila kasi aalisin sila sa team at ndi na makakapag aral ng free. so, susunod tlga players sa coach. pero agree ako, sa tagal na nila naglalaro sa ang liga, dapat meron tlgang sanction jan, meron dapat parusa jan sa mga ganyan. 20k ung entry fee bawat team/school/club na sasali jan, then if i were the sponsor? alisin na lahat ng support sa team, sayang ung entry fee, then aother incentives then they should go sa school or club na mas magdadala ng sa sposor ng maayos. Bob, kung ako sau, you must try to research pa about the coach ng AU, this kind of people doesn really help football in the country. AU is also a member of CAFA (Cavite Football Association), they do backdoor as a representative ng CAFA sa PFF Smart then at the same time, AU is also a member of NCAA na member naman ng NCRFA? sa tingin ko ndi sila makalusot sa NCRFA kaya they do backdoor, ung mga legit na taga cavite ndi makalaro tlga.. tama ba? Mr. Camba is the pResident of the CAFA, and ung anak nya is keeper ng AU. Kaya nakita mo ung mga galawan nila? for years ito na kalakaran nila sa cavite, thats why until now ndi sila ma regular member ng PFF, well, no doubt kung ndi na ma grant un because of all this things na nangyayari. sila ung sumisira sa lipunan ng football sa pilipinas. parang mga parasites. marami pang issues na umiikot jan and try to do more research, sayang ung pagod mo sa pag punta at manood ng 15mins game-walk out game..

Naging instructor ng referees under PFF and NCRFA and now sa CAFA.
May motibo?

  3. Fine that my internet connection is back now.
Bob, I find your writings usually interesting since sometimes it touches topic close to my heart which is officiating. But on this particular issue, I am saddened that your leaning against AU is quite apparent. Maybe you did not feel good with the team because you only witnessed the last 15 minutes of the 31 played minutes as you were expecting a thrilling fully-played game .

I am not a blogger nor a good writer unlike those who practice it as a habit or a hobby to write pieces they think would be interesting to read for a group of people who are in one way or another can relate to the topic. In my simple understanding, a person blogs because he wants to share facts about events, happening or anything of interest plus the responsible opinion and comment a blogger may add relative to the topic.

In my simple understanding, to be able to give a credible opinion, there must always be complete facts in the original subject matter so as not to mislead other bloggers when making their comments. Half-truths posted would usually result to bloggers making unfair remarks that sometimes turn the forum into a hate campaign or a launching pad to attack and destroy the subject of their ire which is now happening. I am amazed that how, in that very short period of 15 minutes of one of the games of 57, you were able to summarily conclude that we were the real culprit why the match ended such way. The way I read it, you were so furious with AU team because you felt you were short-changed with the anticlimactic result, and it seems, to get back at them, you are now hell-bent on discrediting the team up to the extent of putting them out of commission by depriving them of support and sanctions. This is very dangerous scheme coming from a person perceived to be of service to football who uses the power of social media to make or break a person or entity.

In your piece, you have some points there that would have been clarified had you exerted an effort to take our side before judging us in the name of fairness. Nevertheless, I am attaching the copy of reply letter that I sent to a Rappler writer. I am sure that part of it will answer some of your points but if you wish for a full facts and thorough explanation of the entire issue, you can approach me anytime you want.

    Hi Jaelle,
Sorry my comment came quite late. I was busy the whole Saturday and Sunday due to our tournament in Cavite and I am still suffering from fever due to not so good weather we experienced that time. You do not need to contact me as I am now voluntarily giving my side.
The early goal of San Beda was converted from a foul wrongly called by the ref against AU when in fact it was obvious that a foul was committed by San Beda. The 2nd goal was clear offside. An SBC player after eluding the defenders was fast dribbling the ball toward the AU goal. The AU goalkeeper got no choice but to come out from his position and run toward the attacker to challenge him for the ball. The attacker tried to outplay the goalkeeper but goalkeeper parried the ball but it rebounded to another SBC player who was already in an offside position who kicked the ball into the goal. It was just a simple case of offside but to our dismay the official did not rule it as such: a clear display of incompetence.
This is a high level collegiate tournament but since its existence we usually get refs not even fit to officiate a high school competition. I lament this for past several years but no real move was made by the management to address the problem. Also, it was agreed that it will be on a neutral field when playing versus San Beda. Where in the world you can see a championship match that aside from it is played in opponent’s home field, the referees assigned are incompetent, came from the same FA of which San Beda is a member that represents this FA in PFF tournaments. Plus the referees assessor who also came from same FA who happens to be the same FA President himself. I do not question their impartiality but common sense dictates that the assignment should not be that way. If you have only watched the full played minutes, you will see how and why we can’t stand anymore the ineptness of the referees. It’s the other team that always gets the favorable calls. We play by the rules but we always get the fouls while the other team infringes the laws but is not penalized. We did not want to be part of, for me, a moronic show (pardon my term) that will only put the game into mockery that will subsequently put the dignity of the team and school in jeopardy plus the idea of avoiding injuries and further untoward incidents that the confusing calls or no calls of the refs may cause. To give you few examples, there was an instance that an AU player intentionally got hit in the nape and another one in the face right in front of the ref but unfortunately no calls were made. I have to protect my players from injury as the NCAA Season is fast approaching. We further do not want the situation to escalate into a point that players will lose their respect to the refs and start hitting other players and attack the referees. We do not want to see players lost their playing chance in NCAA and scholarship due to an injury and an act of violence against the refs. Remember the numerous unfinished matches in the past due to walk outs and withdrawals from the competition after violence has occurred between players of both teams (AU not involved) on this same field. We do not want a repeat of those things.

Before the start of this season, the organizer promised that the finals will be played in a neutral and a much better field. During the progress of the tournament, it was observed that officiating is really bad that it gives coaches headache and players bruises, wounds and injuries due to very very poor handling of the games. Often times the players resorted to rough plays and tried to hit and hurt each other because of failure of the referees to control the game. We cannot fully blame the opposing team because it is being tolerated by the refs. To tell you frankly, when playing against strong and physical teams, it’s AU team who often times the aggrieved party. In our dialect “lugi lagi” “lagi lang naduduguan at nababalian” because AU team are trained to always play by the rules and not to resort to dirty plays no matter what. It was on this note that even before the end of the elimination round, it was already suggested that the league should request from PFF class A refs or preferably FIFA refs to officiate in the finals which the management agreed, but I was so surprised and dismayed that the same bunch of refs were assigned in this championship match.

Maybe you would still ask why we quit the game. If my memory serves me right, I have been in the ANG LIGA as a head coach for 9 or 10 seasons already the last 6 of which is with the AU team. The record will speak for itself that it is not our character to quit even when my team is faced with most difficult, hostile and challenging situation during a game. For me I treat it as just another obstacle that I must overcome to further enhance my ability to manage my team to make me a better coach.

Quitting per se is not an option of the team when dealing with even the most unacceptable situation surrounding a particular game. But because what is at stake here is not only the conduct/issue of this particular game is concerned, but rather the whole state of the league, we found quitting the said game as the best or the only way to strongly deliver our message to the management. And I believe that a lot of teams out there would be happy to know about this incident because they will benefit from it once the organizer has addressed the problems. AU team has become their loud messenger delivering the message with a big exclamation point at the end.

Lastly, I congratulate the SBC football team who really worked hard to capture the championship. We really did not want this thing to happen but unfortunately it must happen somehow sometime and it was not our intention to put their football team in embarrassing situation as they are not the target of our message. It just happened that they were the one we were playing with.

  4. i have been enlightened with the replies given this issue. simple facts: there was a championship match between AU and SBC at the SBC home court; score was 2-0 at 31st minute SBC leading; AU walks out and did not continue the match. everything in between are just mere words intended to gratify one’s ego and /or rationalize one’s action. soccer – a game of life..let us keep it this way. let the coach- coach, players – play, referees – officiate, tournament officials decide.respect.

  5. This was going to happen, I’m surprised it has not happened at a higher level. Something has to change with the officiating in the Philippines but no one is doing anything about it!! The team and coach will be punished because the referees are ALWAYS right!!! Though they are wrong!!!
