You’re never too old to play football. Take it from former national team player Mindo Fajardo, who, as of two years ago, was still playing at the ripe old age of 79. Surely, then, those half that age have no excuse not to kick around?
That’s the thinking behind the Jim Bean 35’s Football Tournament, which kicks off next month in the Chelsea/Gatorade Blue Pitch.
“We want to promote the event as a venue for the ‘young once’,” explains Cathy Nazareno of Mac2GroupManila, who is running the tournament.
“We want people to have an opportunity to have a league that is fun, yet competitive for their age category.”
The Jim Beam is a nine-a-side tournament that will be held over four weekend playdates from December 5 up until March. (I guess the recovery time for over-35 players is longer than usual.) Teams will play three matches a day but thankfully each game will be one twenty-minute long period.
Each side, composed of a maximum of eighteen players 35 years old or older, can enjoy unlimited in-and-out substitutions. And if you don’t fancy moving around the pitch too much, you will be thrilled to note that there will be no offside rule.
The eight sides will be split up into two groups of four, with the teams playing a double-round robin format. The group stage will take place on December 5 and January 17. The top two in each group meet in the semifinals of the Championship division on February 21, with the bottom two teams still qualifying for postseason action in the Plate division semis on the same date. On the weekend of March 19, the champs of both tiers will be crowned in their respective final matches.
The registration fee for the tournament is P6,000 to reserve a slot and another P6,000 once the competition begins, not bad considering each team is assured of at least seven games.
Naturally, Jim Beam will be served on all match days, (presumably after the games.) The champion teams will also receive Jim Beam gift packs as their winning prizes. Jim Beam, from Clermont, Kentucky, is the best-selling bourbon whiskey in the world, and it’s been family owned and operated since 1795.
